How much does it cost to enter?
The fee to enter each of the adult categories is £8 for submitting up to eight images. You can enter as many categories as you want, and you can enter each category more than once if you want to submit more than eight images to any particular category, upon payment of the additional fees. The Young Outdoor Photographer of the Year category is free to enter, and the entrants for this category must be under the age of 18 on the competition deadline date
All payments for the competition are handled by PayPal, and you can pay with or without having a PayPal account. You can pay for categories individually or together via your shopping basket at any time during the competition period.
Do I need a Paypal account to pay?
No. We use Paypal to process our payments, but that doesn’t mean you need an account. When you click “Checkout” you’ll be taken to Paypal and it will give you two options: 1) Pay with my Paypal Account and 2) Pay with debit or credit card. Select the second option and you can pay without creating an account.
I don’t like to make online payments. Can I send a cheque or pay by phone?
With PayPal, you do not need to set up an account with them to be able to pay via them using a credit or debit card. As all images submitted to the competition must be uploaded online via the OPOTY website, we unfortunatley cannot accept offline payments for entry this year. If you have any issues while using PayPal then please do get in touch with us – see below – and we will do our best to assist you.

What image rights do you require, and do I retain copyright?
The copyright in all images submitted remains at all times with the photographers. GMC Publications, Outdoor Photography and the sponsor will require the rights to use the submitted images in direct association with the promotion and reporting of the competition and within the Outdoor Photographer of the Year book or other competition associated products, if selected. The sponsor will require the rights to use the overall winner's images from the Polar expedition as part of a multimedia brand campaign throughout their territories of operation and for possible promotion of the Polar expedition. We won't use your images for anything else without your express permission being sought beforehand. And we certainly won't be selling your images or data to anyone else.
Will I be contacted if I am unsuccessful?
Unfortunately, due to the high number of entries, we will only contact you if your image/s has been shortlisted for a category.
I’m not very fit or experienced. Will I be ok to go on the Fjällräven Polar expedition?
The concept behind the Fjällräven Polar is that it allows anyone from any walk of life to experience the Arctic winter if they have the right knowledge and equipment, both of which are provided by Fjällräven and the expert staff they use to run the expedition. So, you do not have to be an athlete to participate. The overall winner will be on assignment and travelling as part of the Polar media team; travel will predominantly be by snowmobile to ensure you can get into the right place at the right time to take the best possible photographs of the adventure. A reasonable fitness level (the sort you get from regular walking or other exercise) would allow you to enjoy the assignment more. Weather conditions on the expedition are unpredictable, although they are generally more settled in the Arctic at the time of the trip, so you may need to cope with cold, wet, snowy or windy conditions. You will be sleeping in basic huts and outside in tents throughout the expedition. Find out more about the Fjällräven Polar. Outdoor Photography will provide personal guidance for the overall winner on what camera equipment to take and how to best take care of it in the Arctic conditions.
Is there an age limit for the trip?
The overall winner has to be over the age of 18 at the time of the Polar expedition to go on the assignment.
